On the first business day following December 10, nominations are compiled and presented to the secretary of the board of directors of the Madame Walker Theatre Center. The secretary may appoint an ad hoc committee to assist him/her in creating a slate of nominees to be presented to the full board during its January meeting. Fourteen days prior to that meeting, the board is presented a slate with accompanying information on each nominee and must selects one honoree per award category. In the event there is an even number of board members, the Chairman of the Board shall abstain.

Selected honorees and their nominators are notified by January 30 of their selection. In the instance that an honoree declines to accept the award, the individual with the next highest number of votes is in that category is then selected. The honoree should be present to accept the award and assist the Madame CJ Walker Theatre Center in promoting the awards event.
